Tinnitus and Hyperacusis
Tinnitus is a very common problem affecting 44 million Americans. Problem tinnitus (also known as ‘ringing in the ears’) is the frequent experience of bothersome sound that other people cannot hear. For individuals with problem tinnitus, it is perceived as a threat to their well-being. For these people, it interferes with their daily work and even with their sleep. Often associated with tinnitus, but also can be experienced alone, hyperacusis can be equally disruptive. Hyperacusis is the condition in which ordinary sounds seem unpleasantly loud or painful. In both tinnitus or hyperacusis, the causes can vary which emphasizes the need for an auditory evaluation.
Often Hearing Specialty Group’s treatment plans focus on retraining the brain to reduce the effects of tinnitus and/or hyperacusis on the patient’s quality of life. The treatment protocol combines education and counseling with sound therapy. Research shows that the effectiveness of treatment is highest when hearing aids or tinnitus maskers are combined with a structured education and counseling program. The success rate of tinnitus retraining treatment is 80-90%.
